Il leggendario primo grande preamplificatore di Marantz considerato il migliore. Tutti i controlli operano un lavoro silenzioso e preciso; le manopole originali sono in ottone pesante pieno, mentre l’unità adotta tre valvole Telefunken 12AX7 ECC83.

A quel tempo, Marantz lavorava come un artista “commerciale”, e armeggiava con l’hi-fi. Non riusciva a trovare qualcosa che suonasse bene e decise che avrebbe dovuto costruire la propria attrezzatura.

Con una formazione di base e un breve corso di elettronica militare durante la seconda guerra mondiale, costruì quello che si vede nelle foto. Jean D. Marantz, sua moglie, e un laureato di Vassar lo assistettero, eseguendo i necessari calcoli matematici. Egli mostrò quel prototipo al suo amico Mike Plum, un commesso di Harvey Radio a Manhattan. Plum lo invitò a dimostrare l’apparecchio ai suoi amici presso Harvey. Dopo la dimostrazione gli disse che se avesse potuto costruirne 100, Harvey avrebbe potuto venderli. A partire dalla sua cantina, ai Kew Gardens, nel Queens, iniziò la produzione per soddisfare l’ordine. I 100 esemplari vennero venduti prima che la produzione fosse completata e il resto è storia.

L’unità è un po sciupata per l’usura, è stata tenuta in garage, soffitte e cantine per tanti anni.La valvola è 12AU7 manca, e le due 12AX7 sono molto probabilmente non originale. Altre parti sembrano essere perse nel corso degli anni, e quello che si vede è ciò che resta.

Here are four images of the prototype Model 1 Consollette built by Saul B. Marantz ca. 1953. At that time, Marantz was working as a commercial artist and tinkering with hi-fi. He could not find anything that sounded good in those days and decided he would have to build his own equipment. With an eighth grade education and a brief military electronics course during WW II under his belt, he built what you see in the attached photos. Jean D. Marantz, his wife and a graduate of Vassar, assisted by performing the necessary mathematical calculations for him.

He demonstrated this prototype for his friend, Mike Plum, a salesman for Harvey Radio in Manhattan. Plum invited him to demonstrate the unit for the “gang” at Harvey. Following the demonstration, the gang at Harvey told him that if he could build 100 of them, Harvey could sell them. Starting in his Kew Gardens, Queens, basement, he began production to meet the order. The 100 were sold out before production was completed and the rest is history.

The unit is a little worse for wear, having been relegated to garages, attics, and basements all these years. The 12AU7 vacuum tube is missing, and the two 12AX7’s are most likely not original. Other parts appear to have “fallen off” over the years, and what you see is all that remains.

Legendary first great preamplifier by Marantz and the best, all controls and knobs operates quiet and precise, knobs are original heavy solid brass, the paint have stripes and few discolations but this unit is in fine working order, have 3 tubes 12AX7 ECC83 Telefunken,………….
